Nikon Closes Japan Factory

Thailand will be where all Nikon cameras are made going forward. The article also speculates Nikon might have to sell out due to lack of profits. Not good news.

Argh, I searched in this forum before posting. Didn't think it would be elsewhere.

The Sendai factory was badly damaged in the earthquake/tsunami a few years back.
The impact was not just the factory damage, but the infrastructure needed to support manufacturing.
I'm surprised it came back online, frankly, given the cost structure in Japan and the hurdles placed by the disaster.
My guess is that some critical machines and processes couldn't be moved quick enough.
