Nikon D300s Lens Lever

I took my ol' D300S out a few days ago for a photo shoot, but found the viewfinder very dark. I did a reset of memory banks, did a firmware update to version 1.02, but when taking a photo, the viewfinder display "err" in left hand corner.
I then noticed the Lens Lever on the camera is situated in a "down position" where as my other Nikons have this in "up" position.
Pressing DOF button makes the Lever move up and then return to down.
Taking pictures without the lens, I can see the Lever moving up and down.
I doubt a "spring" is broken as I can manually move the Lever up and it returns to down by itself.
If it can be fixed easily it would be great, but I don't think it is economical to spend hundreds of $ on a camera worth next to nothing these days.
I have attached a picture showing the problem.
Any help, ideas, thoughts is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
