Nikon G or D Lens? (50mm / 85mm f1.8)

I've had both the 50 1.8 D and G, but never at the same time. I did notice that, from MY copies, the G outperformed the D with flare and sharpness wide open. By f/4 I think they were about the same. But at 1.8 ... the G is just spectacular for portraits. The D I usually stopped down to f/2.2 or so to get acceptable (to me) results.

I've read that the 85 f/1.8G is an amazing lens, but I've only read about it.

I got a beat up 50 non-D on e-bay several years ago and it is the best 50 bucks I ever spent. It is possible the G version is better, but I'm not temped to upgrade. I've said for years the D (or non-D) is so good and so cheap everyone should have one.

I don't own the G version of the lens, but own two previous D versions. From what I've seen of images from the G version, I would go with that if I was buying another one.

Thanks folks, appears the 85G 1.8 would be a better bet then, theres about £80 price difference new between them in the UK, the 50mm is easier as new they are basically the same price.
