My metering and shooting selections depend on the ambient light, Bryan... both the level of ambient light, and the consistency between various portions of the venue.
At the ceremony, I'm forced to use the ambient as the main light. If flash is permissable, I'll use it for fill.
For the formals and the reception, I'll use my speedlight as the main, and the ambient for fill. Here's a sample, followed by the shooting data.
