Northern Gannets at Helgoland, North Sea

Discussion in 'Birds' started by Digimule, Jun 7, 2007.

  1. Hi,
last weekend my wife and I visited Helgoland, the only German off-shore island (ok, just 50 Kilometers from the coast...). There is a huge colony of Northern Gannets and I took some pics with my new D200. Hope you like them.

This is the rock where photographers fight for the best places to shoot

  3. That looks like a dangerous place to fight - what happens to the losers?

    Great Images.
  7. Oh, the losers are thrown off the rock to feed the fish ...

Without their gear, of course, this is always auctioned on the spot to the winners. My problem was, on that day, that only Canon users were thrown down...
  8. Andreas,

beautiful shots. Thanks for sharing & congrats.

Andreas, I looked up Helgoland on the internet and it looks like a wonderful place! Wouldn't it be lovely to live in a place with only 1600 inhabitants? Hope you enjoyed your trip.

Your gannets are beautiful. There are a couple gannets living in a bird sanctuary here in Tampa, and they look very sad. Those two are the only live ones I've seen. I did see a dead gannet once in NB Canada which had been hit by a car. I made my father pull over so I could get a close look. Fascinating yellow on their heads.
  12. I love the makeup, treamendous coloring on these birds and you capyured it well
  13. Thanks for all the replies! The place is great, especially for photographers.

The island is tax free and every day at noon thousands of tourists arrive, buy alcohol, cigarettes and perfumes like crazy and leave four hours later. The best you can do during that time is get some rest. The rest of the day the island is nearly empty and beautiful. So staying at least two days is useful, because the light is better and you have more time and space to move.

I'll add some grey seal pics from the same trip in the animals section.
