I have now seen 6 whooping cranes over the past few years. Numbers 1-4 were first seen as youngsters and then later as adults near Kaskaskia, IL. Numbers 5 and 6 came as a surprise while recently visiting Horicon Marsh in WI. These are young bird still sporting some of their colt colors. Using the car as a blind, they approached rather closely for awhile. As I was watching these, a couple of sandhill cranes landed in the same field. I was too busy to take much notice.
