Old AF/AF-D/G FX zoom lenses for my D700

Primarily because of cost constraints I wish to buy some old AF/AF-D/G FX zoom lenses in the range of 24mm ish to 135mm ish focal lengths.

I'll be primarily use them for shooting fireworks with my D700 , so macro, vibration reduction and wide open performance are not priorities however sharpness and color/contrast are.

I also don't care for material of construction be it plastic or metal.

I typically rent 14-24, 17-35 and 28-300 , particularly the 14-24 is a stellar performer, though rarely I need that range of focal length. Most of my shots fall within 24-150mm range and rarely till 200mm.

I'm looking for some cheap AF/AF-D/G type of Nikon lenses and good equivalent third party lenses in the 24/28 - 135/200 range and sharpness/color/contrast are the major requirements. I would prefer 135mm ish at the longer focal range, however if the lens is sharp I may well cut it down to 105mm or even to 85mm.

I've a 28-80 AF-D, very cheap and a very good performer, I've got many keeper shots taken with that tiny gem.

I've recently bought the Nikkor 35-135 AF ( late version), sort of OK but I think I can have something sharper.

For the third party ones, I've a Tamron 28-30 DI VC, good color and contrast however sharpness left a little more to be desired though being such a superzoom I guess its quite a good performer.Of course it can't hold a candle to Nikon's 28-300 which has a
much higher price tag as well

I've short listed the followings, please let me know how good they could be. Plus add your choice of lenses generously

Nikkor AF 24-120
Nikkor AF 24-85
Nikkor AF 28-85
Nikkor AF 28-105
Nikkor AF 28-200
Nikkor AF 28-100 G (Not good I believe)
Nikkor 35-105

Third Party:
Tamron 24-135

I'll post some photos taken by some of the lenses I mentioned.

Thanks

D3 (same sensor as the D700) with the AF-S 17-35 f2.8
PJ's staple over the years, plays well with ALL my bodies. ;)

Thanks everybody for your replies. Ideally a 24-120 would suit me best, and I'm looking for one used f/4 model in the auction website. As an interim measure I'll then opt for an 28-105 then as suggested many nikonians in this as well as other discussion groups.

35-70 would have a good choice but the focal lengths fall short of my requirements at present. I'll reserve that for some future considerations.

17-35 served me great and ideally I should have something in the ultra wide range. I'm considering a few others as well. Wish to talk about that another thread sometime later.

Thanks again for all your suggestions.

I'm in love with the AF 135mm f/2 DC.

It's tack sharp and has a wonderful bokeh.

I use a Tamron 24-135 f/3.5-5.6 is my walkaround/vacation lens of choice on my Df. I also use it for shooting items that I want to sell - either here or on Ebay. It's extremely sharp, very inexpensive, balances well with the camera, and is very inexpensive. The only thing that it lacks is VR - but I never had that option when I was younger, so it's not a problem.

I'm not particularly happy with any of the zooms I've tried on my D600, although of those the 24-85 f3.5-4.5 VR appears to me to be the best. How about one of these paired up with either an 80-200mm f2.8D or 80-200mm f2.8 AF-S. Both of these have good color and contrast .... the AF-S version is exceptional.

I have a D700 and switch between the 35-70 2.8D and (80-200 2.8D last one made before AF-S) and both are keepers...occasionally using 35 1.8G AF-S for architectural hdr.

Cannot afford 2.8G AF-S in any focal length

I am getting ready to sell my D700 with 4500 Clicks, I loved the 35-70 2.8 with that body
check fm on used prices, d700's have held value a long time. Many (including me) think it was a classic body, small, fast, only 12mb and d3 like high iso
