Opinions wanted on family portrait

    Some friends of mine wanted me to take some family pictures of them at the botanical gardens. The lighting in some of the locations was less than ideal.

    I would like some opinions on how I've retouched this. The main issues are getting the skin color right, and fixing the light across the dad's head (this is a first attempt, I'll fine tune the masking later).

    I have better shots than this. This is just the first one I tackled and I want to make sure I'm on the right track.

    I would make a selection on the people before lightening them.
    You now have a blown back ground
  3. The biggest problem to me is the uneven lighting... that splash of light on his face.

    (EDIT) But you already know that... Sorry, I have no no magic bullet for fixing this.

    Thanks Gale. I'm planning on masking out the background when doing the color correction and lightening. I'll probably blur it a little too.

    I tried darkening half the face a little to at least reduce the affect of the uneven lighting. This definitely wasn't the best location.

    How does the skin color look?
