thanks for those very nice comments Karen, they are much appreciated.

The 80-400 has enabled me to get all the shts now, the close, medium and far away ones and the D7100's amazing pixel coverage now enables the ones that are really far away, especially when I shoot in 1.3 mode and the 400mm becomes 800mm

Randy, you earned those comments!

Unfortunately  you now have me lusting for the 80-400!!!!!!!!

Have you used it much on the D800? Does the 80-400 take a 1.4 tele?

If Nikon doesn't release a D300 replacement in the next year or so, I might get the D7100.

once on the d800 and it was superb
I haven't tried the TC yet, still trying to come to grips with how well the 1.3 mode works, hard to believe it can take a tc well also but maybe it can

with a tc and with 1.3 mode it's close to 1200mm:confused:

Those are some nice shots Randy, and thanks for explaining how it was accomplished, that helps me in my long reach lens dilemma, I was scratching my head when EXIF said 220mm, thought you had a hydraulic lift boom.

thanks Darrel

i don't think any of those shots were using the 1.3 mode so 220mm was
220mm dx....all of these are shot from a boat, the osprey nests are on shoal markers and some are very close to the water, almost at eye level from the boat now that lake norman is so high
