Hi

since I'm adopting there, I've just heard a news that ethiopian government will slow down from 50 to 5 international adoption files every day due to the corruption generated by requests coming mostly from North America because of the high sums involved and the less controls applied so far.

This has started on March 10th

Here's the link to the news (unfortunately in Italian) but I thought it was worthwhile to share because of the impact on the adopting families. They say that Ethiopia, after China, has become the most popular country where families adopt, with about 2500 adoptions yearly.

I don't know how it works there but it might be useful to check onsite.

This is not good news. Some friends of mine just started their papers for adopting from Ethiopia. Hopefully they can still adopt.

It hurts I know... I don't know how it works, so take it with a grain of salt, but the nutshell seems that the way you follow for adoptions is prone to generate corruption cases among operators there because people are very poor and the government now willing to stop and check one by one. They said that half of Ethiopian daily adoptions (i.e. 25 out of 50) are toward USA. I think you can check because also the U.S. Department of State is mentioned.

It's a shame that a few corrupt adoptions spoil the chance for these children to be part of a loving family. You would think for how much a single adoption costs, the adoption agency would be willing to make things as seamless and secure as possible. I guess not.

Hopefully things get straightened out and the adoptions can continue without hindrance.
