Panama #3 - Panama Canal

Discussion in 'Landscapes, Architecture, and Cityscapes' started by bobhoge, May 29, 2005.

  1. We went through the Panama Canal at the end of the Costa Rica and Panama trip. We went up from the Pacific to Lake Gatun in the evening and then down from Lake Gatun to the Atlantic the following afternoon after a stop at Barro Colorado in the morning.

The Bridge of the Americas carries the Pan American Highway over the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal:
    13730672-M.

Pulling into the Miraflores Locks. Each lock lifts the ship about 30 feet and can handle ships up to 965 feet long:
    13730690-M.

The Pilot Boat brings the Canal Pilot and the Line Handlers aboard. This is the only place where the Ship's Captain gives up control of his ship. All other Harbor and Canal Pilots merely advise the Ship's Captain.
    13730647-M.

In the Gatun Locks ready to be dropped down to the Atlantic Ocean level:
    13731141-M-1.

The gates of the Gatun Locks open after we have been lowered:
    13731159-M.

Trip information is posted in Places to Shoot here:
