In the dark a tripod could be mistaken for this.

I used to have a Gitzo 2220, with the swing arm, and when used with a long lens with arm folded back over the legs it sure looked a lot like Luke's picture above--especially when I used it with a sling.

I could perhaps understand this more if the photographer was the subject of the stop ... heaven help if any random person carrying anything which 'could be' mistaken for a gun ends up getting shot!
