Photoshop CS won't open NEFs

Discussion in 'General Technical Discussion' started by Pa, Oct 19, 2005.

  1. I haven't used PSCS to edit a RAW file in several weeks. Now it refuses to open a NEF file, saying "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document".

I have checked to be sure I still have:

    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop CS\Plug-Ins\File Formats\Camera Raw.8BI

Isn't this supposed to be all that's required?

    Thanks for your help.

You didn't upgrade your camera to a version not supported by your version of ACR?

  3. Well, it is a new D70s rather then my D70. Could that be the problem?

    Indeed it could :frown:

  5. I checked the Adobe site, and there is no newer version of this file for PSCS.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I rather think Adobe want people to upgrade to CS2.

  7. Looks like you are right. Digging through the Adobe web site, it appears that the D70s NEFs can only be opened with ACR 3.2, which is not compatible with PSCS.

I'm not going to spend $600 for CS2 just so I can convert D70s RAW files; I'll use Raw Shooter - it's free!

Do you still have a D70, or just a D70s? There is a 2 byte change you can make to ACR for CS that will enable D70s, at the expense of D70 (no 's').

  9. Yes, I have both. I bought the "s" just a couple of weeks ago, not aware of the ACR problem. However, as I have PS/CS on both my workstation and my laptop, and could rig one to handle the D70 and one the D70s.

How does one effect this 2 byte change?

  11. Just answered my own question -> NO.

  12. I have downloaded a free HEX editor (XVI32), and I can open Camera Raw.8bi, and I have found the string NIKON D70, but i don't know how I should modify it.

    Can any of you help?

    Thanks.

  14. Thanks for posting this. It works!

Instead of destroying the original file, I saved it under a different name. Now if I want to process D70 NEFs, I just rename the original file back to Camera Raw.8bi.

It's a bit awkward, but a lot better than spending $600 on CS2!

  15. Update

Now I find that it also opens NEFs from the original D70!

i.e. by editing the hex file and adding the "S" after D70, Camera Raw.8bi opens NEFs from both the D70 and the D70s. I was under the impression that this change would destroy the ability to open D70 files.

So now it's not awkward at all.

Hmmm. How hard would it have been for Adobe to do that . . . .

  17. They could just release an ACR 2.5 with updates for new cameras. But then they would sell fewer copies of CS2 @ $600/pop!
