Those are called batter pile. They provide horizontal stability in the finished structure, similar to cross bracing you see in carpentry.

On a side note to the author of this thread, my family is in the construction business and I was wondering if you could tell me a bit more about your pile driving set up. We drive with vibration and impact hammers (A.P.E.) suspended from friction cranes with and without leads depending on circumstance. I have not seen the setup in your photos before. Is this a significant improvement from more traditional hammer setups?

It's a crane with fixed leader,max. weight pile and hammer can be 110 tons
We use PVE vibrationhammers and IHC hydro hammers or the old diesel hammers "Delmag"witch are still the best for concrete piles.

The cofiguration in the pictures above is for maritime works the best it's an IHC S90 (90 stands for 90Kn)it has this advantage that the barge wont sink in while starting the hammer as witch is the case when using a diesel hammer
So the position of the pile is better assured and the survey is easier.

Our biggest vibration hammer is the PVE 105 with 230 tons power to get a max amplitude of 10.5 mm in the pile,our biggest hydro hammer is an IHC Sc200 (c stands for accelaration of the hammer weight,200 for 200 kn)

I believe that both PVE and IHC are used in the US

We also work with crawler cranes without leaders f.i. sheet piles and big steel piles.
