"platform" for tripod

I built the platform as a substitute for a gimbal. It works well as a camera/lens support if you are shooting into a limited area...probably better than the gimbal. But if your targets are widespread the gimbal is better.

I accomplish something similar with a monopod that has a small beanbag mount. Can't take hands off but it provides a support for static shots and you can just pick up the camera for BIF.

Would you want slightly less fill so that you can have a shallow or flat area in the middle to cradle/rest the lens?

I wasn't after perfection. You are right of course but I don't think it makes much practical difference.
If I were to make another one I think I would try for a smaller platform - smaller in diameter and width.
