Leeds University organised a photographic competition.

Here's a quote from their website...

"The University's city and regional office is running a photography competition, encouraging you (whether student, University staff or member of the public) to capture and submit images which reflect the way you perceive the inner North West area of Leeds (Hyde Park, Woodhouse, Headingley, Kirkstall and Weetwood). The images can be positive or negative, people or places, it's up to you. The 1st prize is £200, 2nd prize £100 and 3rd prize £50. The images will be used in the new community strategy, published in the autumn, and associated publicity."

I entered the photograph below and earlier today I received a call to inform me that it had won first prize! I tried to illustrate different sections of the community living closely together in harmony as demonstrated by the juxtaposition of vastly differing architectural styles.

I've had a few pictures published in various publications but this is my first ever competition win. Needless to say, I'm thrilled.

Brilliant, Clive! I see you took the shot at 38mm. Kit lens? And did you include the estate agent's sign as a compositional element?

I see you linked the default size from pbase, which signals them to squish and desaturate the picture with some primitive algorithm. This "original size" version
does a better job of portraying your masterpiece. Well done!

Bravo! Well done Clive! I love the colors! (and so did the judges, eh?)!!!!

So don't spend it all in one place, and don't tell us you did it with a Canon P&S, K? ;)

Actually now that I see Frank is on the scene, you'll be spending it on lenses, so, enjoy. Congratulations!

Thanks, Frank.

Like you, I passed on the kit lens when I bought my D70. I used the Nikkor 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED-IF AF-S.

The estate agent's sign was just there and as it's a firm that specialises in student lets I thought it was appropriate to the theme.
