Ok, I may get some chuckles, but please give your input. I'm curious as to how many actually prefer the "cream machine" over the 105VR if you had to choose between the two.

The reason I'm asking is that I recently sold my 85 1.4 inorder to get my much beloved 70-200 back. I have the 105VR and love it, but....it being the 1st time in years I've been without the 1.4, I'm missing it badly.

  2. If I had to choose strickly on the lens it would be the 85. (also I'm still DX)

I had both and sold the 105 a few years ago. I did just buy another copy of the 105 but only because I wanted something with AF-S and VR for wedding ceremonies, the 85 can be loud.

Well you can't get photos like this with the 105.

Hands down the 85. The 105 VR is certainly an excellent optic, but you can get the same or sometimes even better results with any number of macro lenses. The 85/1.4 on the other hand is unique. Short of the 200/2 perhaps no other lens can give this look.
  6. I tend to use the 105 VR quite often as it is the only macro lens in my bag.

Thanks for the replies. So far at 14 to 5, the 85 has a big edge as I thought it would.

  10. I love my 85. Wouldn't trade it for anything. (unless of course the new lens cost loads more lol)

I have both and would choose the 105. Vr, better focal length and closer focus distance but the 85 is nice too.
  13. I agree with Ed's analysis. Two different lenses, designed with two different shots in mind.

Well, 35 to 12 in favor of the 85 1.4.
