Those are great shots Vinh! Actually, these are all great shots. There was so much street lighting where I was at that I couldn't get a true black sky. :frown:

Mine came out horrible. Using a D50 on a tripod at ISO 200, f11, at 28mm, bulb for 1-3 secs. I was shooting a neighbor's fireworks so I was basically shooting straight up into the air. I did not zoom out to infinity, but they are still very blurred with little color. I read somewhere that I should have closed the view finder. Pictures I took 30 years ago from a mile away with 35mm Minolta SLR came out 100% better than these. I'm very disappointed.
Any thoughts?

Yeah I know corny name... But I am a Sci-Fi and I thought this one just looked too cool. I got around 60 or 70 good fireworks shots but I like this one the best. I took around 350 during a 20 minute show here in Frisco Texas.

It was a clear black sky with no clouds and shooting from the 5th floor of the Frisco City Hall.

ISO 400, F16 to F22, SS 1.6 sec

Your settings seem O.K., but it sounds as though you're very close to the fireworks - much closer than most others on this thread. My shutter open times were anywhere from 3 to 8 seconds. I used f8 - f11 with focus at infinity. Focus would be a problem if you are close enough, though. I imagine a smaller stop would have helped a bit to cut down on the flare and bloom - say f16-f22.

Thanks Whisky. I read up on the settings before I started and thought I was OK. I probably was too close. It rained that night, so the main display about a mile away was canceled. That was the one I had planned to shoot. Like you said...next year.

Love your's Tim. I had about the same Type of shows as everyone else.

One night was what I would call a close community set...one here one there...very good for composite shots.:

I love the Hummingbird shot especially with the light reflection on the lake.


I was shooting from the 5th floor of City Hall here in Frisco and did not have anything "cool" under me to try and include. I was going to add the Frisco Square below us but the fireworks were off to the side and did not present a good angle on the square or streets.

Dang guys, there are a lot of good shots. You really need to check out my challenge in the D80 forum http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1034&message=28535213 and get your entries submitted.

Anyway, here's what I came up with on the 4th. First time shooting fireworks since my film days, where my results were, shall we say, less than stellar. It's so much nicer to be able to perfect your exposure by looking at the screen after the shot. It's also so much nicer to be able to see if what you're doing is working, especially when you start thinking outside the box and trying different approaches. That's what I wanted to do this time. I don't have any pretty scenery to incorporate into my fireworks images, so I figured I would try the technique where you zoom from wide to tele during the long exposure. I think it turned out pretty neat. These were all shot with a D80 and Nikkor 18-200VR in RAW. Images adjusted in ACR by boosting vibrance and tweaking exposure a bit. They are uncropped. Comments and critiques more than welcome.
