Quick decision - V1 and 10mm pancake lens

I know the V1's are disappearing fast, I can still get a new one with the 10mm f/2.8 from Henrys for $350 CDN. Seems reasonable, as I don't have a compact camera, the EVF would be great plus the lens is reputed to be of good optical quality.

Any reason NOT to get the 10mm as opposed to the kit zoom?

I have a V1 that I got off Jessops for cheap (ex-Demo) 2 weeks before they closed. Got the 10mm lens, the 10-30 and the 30-110, the FT1 adaptor and the Flash.
Great little camera but it shows it limits when you need to crop and zoom in.
A close relative bought the RX100 at the same time for the same price.
I should have.

I had both the 10 & 10-30, I returned the 10. Unless you need the smaller size there's no real benefit IMHO, it's not much faster than the kit lens which also has VR (+ the extra range), I didn't find it any sharper either. I'd personally get the 10-30 & 18.5 if I were shopping for a V1 again.

Thanks, the reviews I read seemed to think the 10mm was a better lens - I know you can't override the focus except by using the camera. I may hold out and spring for the Fuji X100s when I can afford it.....

I'm not a pixel peeper but I'd go along with the Photozone reviews, the 10 might be slightly better but I never noticed enough of a difference considering it's a prime. The size wasn't a big deal to me so I went with the flexibility of the zoom.

I'll counter-point. i never use my 10-30. ever. Love the 10. can't wait to buy the 18. and 32. I find the image quality of my V1 and 10mm better than when I had the 20-35mm f/2.8 zoom on my D300. So there you have it.

+1

I never use the 10-30, either. My main lens on the V1 is the 18.5/1.8 which is my walk-around, portraits and kids lens. Aside from it, I usually carry the 10 for wide angle and 30-110 for wildlife. These are all great lenses.

I have both, and I don't have a preference. Both are sharp, the 10mm is conveniently small and f/2.8, while the 10-30mm has more flexibilty and VR.

If you're going to do video, the 10-30mm may be the better option because of VR.
