Recent D300, 500 AFS VR and NearUniWB work

My wife has had some medical issues lately, including a surgical lung biopsy and hospital stay, so I haven't had time to process much I've shot recently, but here are a few....
All captured with a D300, 500 AFS~VR and utilizing the NearUniWB preset. All were using 51 pt (non 3D)

Very nice backgrounds on all of the shots. I like number 2. As you mentioned on another forum, it is rare to see a woodpecker on anything other than a tree trunk.

Can you explain the NearUniWB preset? Is that cutting wb off in camera and then setting the file with a raw converter??

I've started a paper for myself...twice, but it's daunting. Much of it is Iliah Borg's work and I'm not very comfortable co-opting it in a long document. I think perhaps between Iliah and Charles (cwilt) 99% would be their core work.

I'll check around and see about permission.

An Update on My Wife

A Short history...

Jeannie has been treated for "asthma" for 4 years, even though she never had an "asthma attack".

Last fall, her breathing capacity worsened down to 46% of normal, so this spring, we sought a team approach and Brigham and Women's in Boston. The pulmonary specialists believe it's Bronchiolitis based on cat / pet scans, which can be an autoimmune disease which would go hand in hand with the arthritis she has. The arthritis specialist and thoracic surgeon weren't so sure and strongly recommended a surgical biopsy, which she just underwent last Monday. Recovery from this is slow, especially if you already have impaired lungs. Recovery back to "normal" can be as long as 6 weeks.

The pulmonologists wanted to start carpet bombing her with immunosuppresents typically used to treat cancer (confirmed none) and tumors...but it kills your immune system. On the bright side, it would eradicate her arthritis most likely.

There is the possibility that this could be a rare form of TB, or a mold, fungal or bacterial infection. We won't know for 2-4 weeks what the results are, if any. There is a 75% chance that they will get s diagnosis which will point them toward a particular treatment.

Keep your fingers crossed for us!

Actually, I think It's Not All that Complicated.

I simply shoot using the preset (outdoors) and it allows for a more proper exposure.

I simply batch convert my jpegs with a .set file for selection and then process the individual nefs as I normally would anyway.

You have to re-learn what you already use for EV compensation as more + is needed using the preset, but it's honestly a piece of cake.

your photographs are outstanding, as usual. They inspire me greatly, and I mean outside the scope of camera and Nikon etc. Quite often, they make me bring my binoculars on weekend walks instead of a camera.....
