Red-bellied woodpecker

  1. I need better quality glass on my tele.
To do a test, I went back to my local nest, this time only armed with my 50mm 1.8 prime and a circular polarizer. These are the cropped results. I did indeed get better IQ, albeit with 100% cropping.

That's pretty good for 50 mm. We've got a nesting pair in a tree in our back yard and lately I've sometimes been able to approach to about twenty-odd feet before the resident bird clears off. I assume there's eggs within (I can't hear hatchlings) because normally they're somewhat more skittish.

My thoughts exactly. 50mm? #3 looks especially nice!

  5. Yes 50mm. No kidding!
Actually you can get close enough. I'd say about 8 or 9ft from them is the closest you can get.
