    Gosh these are great, I'm assuming that you shot from a blind.

    Sincere thanks to all for taking time to comment. Happily, I didn't need a blind for these pix. A pair of this model of woodpecker have been preoccupied by poking holes into a small dead palm tree trunk in our back yard (a tree in which there was already a goodly number of holes). It seems that as soon as the woodpecker couple can sculpt a residence-size cavity in the tree, it's co-opted by starlings that have just been relentless in their assault.

    The woodpeckers soldier on though, and since they're distracted by their home construction, with a little care I've been able to approach inside free-throw range. As I recall, these were all taken with the 300 f/4 AFS (a couple might've had a tc attached).
