Sale Nikon 24-70, & Go w/ PRIME

Just thinking out loud, what do you think?

I love my Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VR, along with my Nikon 24-70 f/2.8, but I'm think about selling it and going with PRIMES!

Nikon 20 f/2.8 (architecture)
Nikon 24 f/2.8 (Walk around)
Nikon 85 f/1.8 (portraits)
Nikon 105 f/2.8 MICRO

I already have a Nikon 50 f/1.4

I do weddings, portraits, & sports.
I also would love to pick up the OLDER model of the 28-105 f/3.5-4-5 w/MICRO! Sharp lens......

Any thoughts from anyone that has done this?

I'd keep the zooms and start collecting primes. I think the versatility of zooms is a good option to have and they are two very nice pieces of glass.

I love primes, but those zooms you have - are already first rate, and gives you really good glass with convenience!

If I had those, I'd keep them, then slowly (depending on your $$) accumulate the primes I want.

I was in the same boat at one point and sold my 24-70 and tried to make due with a 24/2.8, 50/1.4 and 28-105. Needless to say I kept the 50 and re-purchased a 2nd 24-70.

For your wedding and sports work, the 24-70 & 70-200 would be your staple. As others have stated, just save up for a prime or two and round out your kit.

I LOVE Primes.... I'm were you were @ Ed, it tares you apart!
I might get the 20 for (architecture), 85 and 105 MICRO, but would also LOVE the 300 2.8 or 4!

Depends a lot on what you shoot as well! I sold off my 24-70 because I usually reach for the 35/50/85 combo in its place....however, shooting weddings, events, etc. you'll be stuffed :wink: so I keep a 24-120 f/4 for working in less controlled environments

I like to use primes when shooting landscapes and for holiday traveling 24mm / 50mm or 35mm / 85mm. 24-70 and 70-200 are mostly used for studio, event work, or dedicated photo trips for me. Then again you can just shoot primes if you do not mind changing lenses.

I was a guest at a friend's wedding and tried to shoot with just my 35mm and 105mm primes... I quickly got fed up switching lenses, and I could never frame the shot quite like I wanted to while I was part of the ceremony. I really should've stuck to my kit lens, and it made me see the value of the 70-200mm.

Based on my limited experience, I'd really suggest keeping the zooms for candid wedding pictures.

keep the zooms - the 24-70 is an amazing lens - its big and heavy but even though i have a wide selection of primes - i always seem to gravitate back to the 24-70 as my go to all purpose lens - also the auto-focus is super fast (i don't have another lens that can match it)

I like to use prime. I'm also a Leica user And an amatorial photografer so i'm confident with manual focus. I prefer prime because i'm looking for specific "caracter" that just a single lens Can have. I use a Leica r 21mm for his color rendering And straight line, a Leica 35mm r for his boken And resolution a 50mm f/2 h.c. That recently won a battle with te zeiss 50mm planar zf2, a 100 zeiss zf2 that has incedibile details And boken And a 180 mm f/2.8 af ed for portrait And framing landscape. But i'm not a professional so i Can loose time to' chance lens.

Think of the 24-70 as 4 lenses you carry in one: 24mm f/2.8, 28mm f2.8, 35 f/2, and a short tele at 70mm. If you take a look at its performance at www.photozone.de, its performance is quite amazing at wide open at f2.8. When i am on vacation, it is the one lens that is on my D700 most of the time.

If you shoot weddings, do you have multiple bodies to put those primes on? If not, keep the zooms. changing lenses throughout the ceremony/reception would be nuts.

I've bought and sold two copies. For my needs it is just too big and heavy, but for event photography I can see where it is an awesome lens.
