Sample indoor sports with an 85 1.8?

Discussion in 'Lens Lust' started by Fabrian, Aug 21, 2008.

  1. As the title suggests, I'm looking to see some sample images taken with this lens of indoor sports. I've been curious how focus speed holds up for, say, indoor volleyball.
  2. I have not posted all recent photos I took, but here are a couple. First one is 1/200 at ISO1000 ( I see you have D300 too)

I bumped the shutter up to 1/500 -.7ev and 1600 ISO

this is frosh vball in smaller gym. Lighting is usual but there are only 3 rows of seats so we are pretty close and I think the 85 is enough. I was happy with the focus speed on this body. Another parent had a D80 with 18-135 - he had to bump up ISO to 3200! Another parent also had a D80 but with an 85 1.4 :)  I was jealous!

With a d50, I use the 85 and 50 1.8s and 35 f2 for volleyball in school gyms. I shoot manual (too many things to trick the meter) usually at f2 or 2.2, 400th or 500th, iso 1600 –. I'll use 2.8 lenses in these venues (fisheye for fun, 180mm for close-ups, for example), but not for action.
  4. Thanks for the input folks, it looks like it keeps up with the action just fine
