K I finally got my 150.00 sandisk rebate as a B&H certificate. I am thinking of getting the SB800.(Like I need another 300 page manual) but am wondering about the height issue on hot shoe. Will it reach over my Nikon 70/300 vr at full extension or will I need a bracket. By full extension I am thinking more about 300 at close range. Think flowers/bugs as fill light.

Also, if I do need a bracket have any of you just attached it to a QR plate on the camera? My Markins has a tripod thread but it just seems that the plate does not have much meat.

I don't have the 70-300 but I do have the 70-200 and I don't need a bracket for it. Maybe others will chime in that have the 70-300.

I have a 70-300 and I use my pop up flash and it reaches over no problem. With the SB800 you should not worry about it.

If you're really into bare-bones, you can always use an SC-29 cable and a hefty rubber band to attach the flash directly to the lens (rotate the head up, so it points along the axis of the lens.) May need a bit of foam between the two to protect finishes.)
