Nope! SB900 is much more powerful than SB800 and d´ont need a 5th battery
  3. But is it really more powerful? What I have read is questionable right?
  4. the circuitry is better so it cycles faster even without the 5 cells is the theory. the manual says 2 seconds to recover from full dump using the right batteries. with my 6 year old no-name NiMH cells, its 5 seconds.

It recycles as fast as a SB-800 that is connected to an external battery pack which is pretty impressive- even nicer when you add the external battery pack to the SB-900 and drop down to 1 second recycling- pretty sweet for sports shooting.
