OFF TOPIC

Let's suppose you travel to Rome, Florence and Venice. A really wonderful tour, I know
Or let's imagine you're leaving and going to Sahara desert.
What would you bring with you ?
D700 + 24-70?
D700 + 24-120?
D90 + 18-55 VR (I'm sorry, you haven't the 16-85 )
hmmm, i have a trip to Italy in September and guess what I'm taking

One camera & two lenses if you want to travel light:
D700 + 24-120 + 180/2.8.
It would be nice to add a 18/3.5 Zeiss ...

i prefer 1&1, d3 + 24-120 & sb800
the tripod and filters aren't even going, i'll take the screw on cpl.
the d3 allows me to do nice 5 shot brackets so i can fix almost anything in lr3 or photmatix 4

i might take the 50 1.4 but prob not

this way i can take the thinktank streetwalker back pack, which is so light and fun to hike with

last yr on my italy trip i took the 16-35,50 & 85 1.4 and the d700
all wrong for me
d700 was not fast enuf (fps) for brackets, never used the 50 or 85 and the 16-35 was way too wide and short, live and learn

after my very recent 2 weeks in the UK i now know the d3 + 24-120 is the perfect combo for me

Love your thread titles..
"stop buying gear"
"sell your 24-70"

anyways, I've strongly considered the 24-120/4 but the extending barrel bothers me for some reason. Did you find this annoying at all?

i stayed away from it for months for the same reason, worried it would suck in dust

as it turns out it doesn't extend that much at all (to me anyway) and was not an issue and it never creeps like the 18-200 did

actually i can honestly say it has no weaknessess for what i want it to do

My D700 shoots brackets at 8fps (without grip). Here is a video on how to set that up. In the video, bracketing mode e5 is set to "flash only" which is for using 8fps for normal shooting, but you can also set e5 to "AE", then dial in your 5 shot bracket and still get the 8fps. The key for the 8fps is to configure a function button for "bracket burst", then hold it down while pressing the shutter release.

You're a bad influence Randy - thanks!

I just walked over to my local camera shop and picked up a 24-120VR. It will replace my 28-105 AF-D. I've been thinking harder about doing this since you started posting your Scotland pics.

Anyway, I'm heading to Algonquin to shoot some moose and loons next week and will try my hand at some landscapes. Wish me luck!

Cheers!

Randy awesome pix. Love to get this lens one day. I had the original 24-120 many years ago and loved the range. This new one turned out fantastic-- nice job nikon!
I figure I'll just have to get by with what I have for the time being. Spent all the cash for a trip to Latvia and england to visit family!

Randy, as i recall you bought the 16-35/4 for your trip to Italy last year and used it for city and landscape shots. Did the 24-120/4 replace that lens, or do you still use it? Nice shots, BTW.

thx

i did get the 16-35 just for my italy trip last yr

the 24-120 replaced the 24-70

the 16-35 was supposed to be a temp lens but it ended up replacing the 14-24

i just don't need f/2.8 was the bottom line and i liked the focal range, takes a filter and VR2 way more

I've been eyeballing the 24-120 since it was released but I am still hanging on tight to my 28-70
i had a 28-70 (actualy twice) before the 24-70
stay w/ the 28-70, IQ is so close you could never tell and 4mm ain't worth the beating u would take switching

now the 24-120 is another story tho:smile:
