I really want to get more shots of birds in flight but I never get them in focus, what settings would you all suggest

today I tried shutter speeds from 1/500 upto 1/1000 iso 200 @f8 I was in afs-c and I tried all the focus points even the 3d tracking. any ideas what im doing wrong?

I use similar settings for my flying bird photography and use burst mode. I usually use single focus point unless shooting in clear sky when I use a few more. Does your lens/camera combination give you sharp focus on a sitting bird? Have you performed AF fine tune with the combination?
