D300 with a 70-200 2.8 - Also have the 1.4 converter

It will be 8:30pm and overcast with a good chance of rain. Sunset will be 10:44pm.

What is the lowest shutter setting that will stop normal player movement? 1/500?

At f/4 using the 1.4, I'm thinking of having it at say 1/500 (or however low will stop player movement) and auto-iso up to 1600.

It would be really nice to keep it at ISO800, but I don't know if I can get away with it...

Thoughts?

Since you have civil sunset at 10:44 PM tonight , you should be OK. A running person can be stopped at 1/500, the ball might still be a bit blurry.

You might have enough light to give ISO 2000 a try as well. I'm assuming that the game should be over before sunset.
