EDIT: Identified as Showy Milkweed by Nick, Jim and Larry, Thank you!

This plant is growing along a ditch bank behind my house. I've never seen it before. Does anyone know what it is? I think it is so unusual and pretty.

I've seen a good bit of that. My local expert, Mrs. T., agrees with Nick's answer. But she is delaying breakfast now while she consults her guidebooks to find the specific milkweed variety.

Very nice. I'm fairly sure it's Showy milkweed, Asclepias speciosa. I had a quest to find all the milkweed species that grow in Manitoba and finally found the last one summer before last. The variation in shape, size and habitat is amazing.

What an interesting quest! Thank you for the identification.
