Shootout Siggy vs. Nikon - a one-shot 50 1.4 shootout

I'm living out a my suitcase again. This time for three days in Little Rock for an educational administrators conference. Since I didn't have anything else to do, I took a little trip to the local camera shop - with my D700/Sigma 50. While I was there, I asked to see the new Nikon 50 1.4. It was quite a bit smaller than the Siggy. The salesman told me to put it on the camera and take a couple shots, so I did. My friend Marty, who tagged along with me, got to be the subject of my informal field test and comparison of the two lenses.

Here are my quick and dirty results. All shots got an "auto tone" in LR2 - and nothing else. All EXIF info should be intact for those who are curious.

Now, which shots were taken with which lens?

I don't have either of these, so don't have a frame of reference for which is which.

That said, I prefer shot two in each of the series - whichever lens that is.

EXIF data doesn't report brand of lens in either of the three programs I looked at it in.

I have no idea which is which, but the second lens appears to make your friend slimmer.

Without placing the photos on top of each other to verify, I'm pretty sure you messed up and posted the same image twice for the full shot examples. If not, your friend held perfectly still while you changed lenses, and you recomposed exactly the same shot. :wink:

Based on your close up bokeh shots I'm thinking the second shot is the siggy.

I did a test with these two lenses also when the Nikon came out.

Without a doubt...top one is Sigma, bottom Nikon.

I don't know which is which, but they are very close. The main difference between two lenses is that Sigma works some time and Nikon work always. Why didn't I get Nikon?!!!!! :actions1:

the EXIF data is the same on both of them too. The other two are different.

I'll vote...#1 Nikon, 2 Sigma.

I think Medic is correct about you having posted the same shot twice, i.e, #1 and #2 are the same shot.
Opanda says #1 and #2 pics were taken at the same time.
The 100% crops were taken at different times from each other.
Perhaps you should double check.
If you examine the eyes, you can see that the gaze direction is different in #3 (the first 100% crop) from #1, #2 and #4.

My vote is number 2 is the Sigma. I've seen enough of Sandro Bravos posts to know that I want that lens.

#2 has better bokeh and a bit more sharpness/contrast but seems to have more of a color cast? Can't be sure given the lighting you were probably under.

My guess is that #2 is the Sigma.
