My 'used' sigma 300 2.8 got it's 1st outing last night,
a 6:30pm soccer game that I normally shoot w/ the 30D.

The lens is built like a hammer and it weighs almost as much as me. AF speed and accuracy were impressive.

Nice captures and use of light. To my mind the best soccer pix are more about body shape and facial expression than the capture of peak action(ball on foot etc) like in shot #8. Look forward to more feedback on the Sigma 300

Looks good Randy so what do you think the AF is probably much faster than the 300 f4

yes, AF is way faster, sharper and more accurate than the 300/4

this is a heavy fat lens though and will take some time to get used to it's immobility....i am a swing and fire shooter who shoots the ball/action and this lens will test me for sure

image detail in this light is impressive
what I have been missing in IQ IMO is the need to min crops...w/ the 70-200 I was cropping too much and losing IQ

Great action shots Randy. I've come across two types of Sigma 300mm f/2.8 lenses. Which one did you get? The one with the EX finish?

*borat voice* .... very nice.....

thx Topher
i think u need to chk one of these out before u get the nikon
it's prob not worth $3K more for the VR and the diff in IQ (but maybe it is)
of course that's new vs used but the nikon's are rare used and are usually $4k

this is the 1st one, the EX HSM APO
the 2nd one is the same but w/ the DG coating
now there may be a non HSM older version but I wouldn't get a non AFS or HSM lens for sports
