I was just looking at the Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM and was wondering if anyone purchased this lens and if they like it compared to the nikon 50's..

It's not available for AF mount just yet. Sigma told me they were shipping them out to the Dealers this week to start selling. Hopefully I'll be able to tell you my thoughts sooner than later

  3. I'll wait for photokina, if Nikon releases either a 50/85 AFS model I might bite. But I don't really use primes for work, but I do have a gap in my collection for a nice low light lens!

Thanks for the heads up. Just placed an order. If all works out, expected delivery is Friday. Love the 30, hopefully the 50 will be just as nice.

Well it is not as large as I thought it would be. Although, compared to the other 50s, it's pretty hefty. And just like the review states, the front element is sunken in pretty deep when focusing towards infinity. The front element is also very large, which is nice. It's very similar to the 85/1.4 in size. One very nice surprise is that it comes with a center-pinch cap! Wahey

  10. LOL! Congrats Francis!

How fast is the AF compared to the screw drive 50?

There is no comparison. They're not even in the same league in terms of AF. In just a blink of the eye, the Sigma is in focus.

  14. How the AF accuracy??? Is the HSM motor noisy???

So far so good:biggrin:. It is an inherent trait of HSM lenses to focus quietly, and this lens is no exception.

    I received mine today also.

Francis, you are doing a great job fielding the questions, so I will let you to it. I might chime in after I come back from the weekend trip that we have planned. Can't wait to see how it does in low light on the D700. I am going to compare it to the 30 on the D300. This may sound like crazy speak, but I don't know as I will see that much difference with higher iso's. Hopefully I will be surprised.

  17. Francis and brodman,

Please post pix when you have a chance!

Also, could you let us know if you see any focus inaccuracies when the lens is very close-up at wide apertures?

I just did, Bill.. As for focus inaccuracies - it's still too early to tell. I'll have to get back with ya on that one after having shot in several different conditions.

I'm myself is deciding of which to buy, but what strike me does zeiss perform that bad at night and at f1.4?
I pretty like zeiss cux its lighter and small compare to the new sigma but from the the dim light shot its a very let down.

As I see it the Sigma is better at the night-shooting, but have you testet it for flare/ghosting ?
