New Sigma 70-200 Macro this weekend. Shot these and I am a little disappointed. They look a bit soft. Had the 300 on a monopod, These are cropped but no other processing at all.

I would really appreciate some CC, as I am boxing up the lens to ship it back. I'm wondering if it could be my technique. I did notice that a few at f4 were sharper than those at 2.8 or 3.2,3.5 etc.

Ok... I must admit these do look a little soft to me as well

Firstly were you using a filter? I used to have this glass and the IQ was ruined by a cheap filter

If that's not the case have you tested the lens for front/backfocus, I have heard a lot of stories about this lens being slightly off and require recalibration.

Yes I did have a filter, good point. I'll try a few without it and see what happens. What is the best way to test for back/front focus?

Ok, well the really cheap one on my camera was totally trashing the IQ, the images I was getting (especially at F2.8 and longer focal lenghts looked very much like yours).

Being an idiot I never realised the filter was behind this (Sigma looked at and told me it was fine) and so I sold the lens at a loss assuming it was somehow faulty.
