Sigma 85mm 1.4 even though I own a Sigma 50mm 1.4?

I currently own a Sigma 50mm 1.4 and use it on my D700.

I keep hearing great things about the 85mm 1.4 and I am tempted to get it.

How useful will the Sigma 85mm 1.4 be for me if I get it?

If you own both with a D700, under what conditions would you use one vs the other?

I probably use an 85/1.4 more than any other lens -- often paired with a 35/2 for low light work, or with a 16-35. I use a 50/1.4, too, though, and they don't really overlap.

I say go for it. They're both proven performers, and differ enough in focal length to warrant owning/using both. If you find that you're using one way more than you're using the other, sell off the other lens.

I have the 50 and plan on the 85!! Do it and have a shoot off with both.

I have the same problem now; At this point in time, I'm going to sell the 50 - Just doesn't get mounted as much anymore now that I have the 24-70.

Decide what you want to do, then decide what tool you need to do the job. If all you do is hammer in nails, why buy a screwdriver?

I had both the Sigma 50 1.4 and the Nikkor 85 1.8 at the same time, and found that I was forcing myself to use the 85 even though the 50 would have been just fine, so I sold it and got the 105 2.8 Micro. If I shot full frame, I would probably go for the 85 over the 50.

I'm in the same boat. Love the 50 on my D300, but lusting for the 85 for the D700. I just don't think it's my most practical purchase at this point with the 50 already in hand (did I just say "practical"? don't let my wife see that!). I don't have ANY desire to sell the 50 to help fund the 85 either.

I like to carry 2 bodies with lens attached and one extra lens. The 24 lives on my D700, so having both the 50 and 85 would be fun, but I can probably wait.

I'll probably put the 85 on the back burner for now and continue saving for the current 135 f/2 or it's possible replacement, or go entirely different direction and get the 24-120 f4.

I've got the Sigma 50 and the Nikon 85 D. IMHO, there's enough difference in focal length to justify keeping both.

I've been thinking of doing the same thing. My 50 basically lived on my camera over winter. Now that spring is here, I'm thinking of picking up the 85 now.
