A slow worm is a legless lizard. They are becoming quite rare in the UK due to loss of habitat and use of pesticides, and are a protected species.
This youngster was making its way across my lawn when I nearly stepped on it. It had already had a run in with a predator as it had a stump tail - they can shed their tails like some other lizards.

Growing up we called them glass snakes since the look and feel like they could be made from fiberglass.

Just ran across a couple this weekend while gardening.

Great pics.
