Can anybody ID this snake for me? I ran across it the other day at the local pond where I shoot a lot. I was fairly close to it and it seemed disinterested in me, but it was a large snake. The largest part about as big around as my wrist.

I think that's a corn snake, but I can't be sure because the body markings are somewhat obscured by the grass and are OOF. The head does not appear triangular, therefore whatever it is, it is not likely poisonous.

Yeah, it looks like a corn snake...but this is the closest shot I have of the actual boddy that's not as blurry (it was dark and I didn't have my flash so I had to go to f/2.8 to get a high enough shutter speed).

Don't go by the "TRIANGULAR" head theory. Elapid snakes have narrow heads and have the highest LD50 of the snake species.

Hence the word "likely" in my post! :) I have learned long ago not to deal in absolutes.

Looks like a big well fed banded water snake, they can inflict a nasty bite but they are harmless.

Isn't the saying "Red against yellow, and you're a dead fellow; red against black, and you're ok, jack."?

  9. That works only for Coral snake vs. King snake or Scarlet snake.

    Cheers,
