The matching Nikon cap for the hood of the 10mm f/2.8 is a screw-on cap, which is a pain with a screw-on hood.

Does anyone have an alternative?

I tested it out, and it does shade the lens from light sources that are off to the side.

I should have checked out third-party sources before buying the Nikon one as it's nothing really complex, but costs as much as the hood and cap combo that Howie found.

Does the hood really do anything for the 10mm? It just seems so tiny so as to not really do anything.

Try using your hand and see if that helps in the situations where you see low contrast. From what I've seen with the lens, contrast isn't an issue, so you are probably experiencing some flare.

Thanks. I'm going to get one. I am hoping it makes me like it more. I've been thinking that it should have more contrast than I've seen.
