Not all flies are disease carrying pests that feed on disgusting stuff and then come and land on your food. Some fly species catch and eat other flies and other insects. Eat is not really the correct term, what they do is inject the victim full of enzymes, which turns their insides to slush, and then they suck out all the juices.
They are not going to win any cute and cuddly prizes either.

Amazing. What did you shoot these with? These are almost too close!!

Daniel

Thanks Daniel.

These were shot with a D90 and a Tamron 90mm macro. The first one is a 50% crop of a 1:1 shot, the fly was about 6 mm. The second was not cropped much and was not 1:1 as this fly was about 15mm.

What kind of f/stop were you using for the video, and were you on a tripod. Seems kind of jumpy if it was on a tripod. The photos are very nice, tho the first one seems kind of dark. Sounds like a disgusting diet that first one has. Only one step above the common fly, and on par with Andrew Zimmern’s tastes in food.

Thanks everyone.

No tubes and tripod mounted. The tripod was a cheap wobbly one which works for stills because you can move it slightly to get focus, but not good for video as the slightest movement is magnified at macro shooting distances. I now have a Bogen tripod with a pan and tilt head which is much sturdier for video.
The video was at f/13.
