South African Penguins

  1. While in Cape Town, South Africa, we went two places where you could see the South African Penguins. These were formerly know as the Jackass Penguins because of their braying call.

    This is one of the groups of penguins that practices allo-preening, that is they preen each other at the same time:

    Here are chicks in several different plumages and one molting. One adult in the background (far right) for comparison:

    You could get really close to some of them - D-70 80-400VR @ 280mm:

  2. Nice ones. I must point the lady who co-ordinates us volunteers at Slimbridge at this posting, she worked in South Africa for a time with penguins, she would love them.

    I never knew there were penguins in hot climates.
