I was watching a Youtube photography clip by Nick Page and he mentioned putting spikes on his RRS tripod. The brand he used was made by a company called Desmond. I found them on Amazon for $19.95 and ordered some, you get 3 for that price. RRS wants $32 for one foot. I really like RRS, but paying $32 per foot might strain our relationship. They arrived, and like some of the reviews mentioned they didn’t thread into the tripod smoothly. I went to the hardware store and picked up a 3/8 inch x 16 die, cost was about $6. Put the die securely into my big shop vice and threaded the spiked feet thru the die, using 3-IN-ONE oil and elbow grease. The nut on the feet takes a 13mm or a 1/2 inch box wrench, I found this worked better than a crescent wrench. Quite a bit of metal shavings came off the threads, I’d have pictures but it was 9F in the shop and I wanted to get back in the house. After running them thru the die, I was able to thread them into the tripod by hand. I added a rubber washer to each foot. Figured the rubber washer might help keep blood out of my tripod legs when I stick a wild animal with these spikes.
