I've been following this thread, wondering whether I should join or not... Arguing for and against, thinking about lens choices...

I will. Go in between the two guys:

and:

by using

- 28/1.4 on the wider side, and
- 135/2.0 DC at the tele end.

They will be used on both cameras, I guess, but for a start, let's fix them this way round:

The tele, as seen by the wide

Nikon D3 - AF Nikkor 28mm 1:1.4D - f/1.8, 1/100, Auto-ISO 560

Sony A7 - AF DC-Nikkor 135mm 1:2.0D - f/2.8, 1/320, Auto-ISO 6400, DC to neutal=0

The 28mm is easier to focus via AF, via the D3, and the to go/walk around lens. Manually focusing the tele while having an exact preview (of the DC feature) and being able to zoom into the picture while taking it should work good on the Sony.

Most shots will be taken along this route:

as the Octoberfest was, some might remember.

I'm glad it's an 'easy going' photo meme. I'm not sure I will use these two lenses exclusively during the whole month, and I think posting 'only' 3 images a week comes in handy for me. As some might remember, we've got a little 'project' running here, the last weeks have been busy preparing the new arrival...

The room's about ready. Originally, they said June 20th to be the planned day of birth, but then, in my wife's family it's common to be born earlier, and... as our little baby girl still refuses to turn upside down, they might want to get her earlier... o_O

So... don't be afraid if I stop posting for a few days in between. Everything will go fine (we hope). I might use a macro lens when away... ;)

So long - let's get it started!

Fantastic! Great to have you aboard, Roland. And looking forward to another great scenic tour as well as some shots of the baby if and when. I'm not going to assign lenses to cameras, so you can switch if you desire. But it sounds like you've got a well thought out place to start. Welcome back!

Thanks for the 'heads-up' message about this, Harry. I'll give it a go - try to use lenses that don't ordinarily get a lot of mileage from me:
10.5 mm DX and 105/2.8G.

They'll mostly be screwed onto a D7100, but will likely also see service on a D200 that was lifepixelled for IR use.

I will definitely not be using my primes exclusively. We are going on a 10 day vacation with our kids and my 24-120 will be a must for our sightseeing adventures with the kids. But I am going to make an effort to use my primes occasionally!!

Well folks, the time for the first “Spring Into Summer” Meme is upon us. This post will outline the guidelines for the meme and hopefully answer some of the questions raised. Thanks to the early crew (you know who you are) who helped shape the meme. If you haven't signed up yet, I hope you will after reviewing the quidelines below. We have tried to make this an "easy and relaxed" event. Just add a post and let us know what you will be shooting, and I'll add you to the list.

The meme will run four weeks and a day … the extra day being the start of Summer, June 21. Here are the “weeks”, which start on a Saturday and end on a Friday. This should maximize flexibility for shooting and posting during each week.

Week One: Saturday 5/24thru Friday 5/31
Week Two: Saturday 5/31 thru Friday 6/6
Week Three: Saturday 6/7 thru Friday 6/13
Week Four: Saturday 6/14 thru Friday 6/20
Bonus Day: Saturday 6/21 – first day of Summer

The meme will officially start 12:00am May 23(your local time) and end 11:59pm June 21 (your local time).

The objective is to take and post three photos a week, either individually or as a group as you see fit, using one or two prime lenses of your choice, and another photo on the first day of summer. As in our past meme’s, if you are shooting film, you may start a week in advance or post a week late to allow processing, but you should identify you posts with the proper week and post number you are submitting for. And if you are shooting digital and just can't wait to start, we will "overlook" a shoot date of May 23 for first photo(s).

Once you have declared your lenses (you may change up until Tuesday May 20) those are the only lenses with which you may submits photos to the meme. You may use other lenses for other purposes … we are trying to keep this “light and easy” in keeping with the season.

We all expect to have fun and share fellowship in the meme; it also serves an educational purpose: to explore the strengths and weakness of our chosen lenses, and through photo and conversation to help other members in the meme appreciate (or not) that lens/lens system. In addition, of course, to helping us appreciate your photographic skills. :)

Posting will be to individual threads set up by each participant at the start of the meme. Since tracking is a bit more complex when not following a daily routine, I’m suggesting the following format for setting up your thread to help all of us know where we stand in our visitations and responses:

Meme - Handle (name) – Week # - Photo #(s) – Posting Date .

Week #, Photo #(s), and Posting Date for this thread-starting post should be updated following each post you make in the thread, to help others locate what is new from what they have already visited.

Examples:

Spring 2014 - Harry Lavo (Harry) – Week 3 – Photo’s 2,3 – June 12
Or
Spring 2014 - Harry Lavo (Harry) – Week 2 – Photo 1 – June 3

To edit the title, go to “Thread Tools” at the upper right of your first post and choose “Edit Title”.

To make tracking easier, I will be logging each participant into a blank tracking sheet right up until 11:00pm on Friday night May 20. My email address is hlavo@yahoo.com. If you send me your address in advance, I will mail you the final version that night. It will be in Excel 2003 format and so should work on most copies of Excel, or in conversion to Apple.

The meme is open not only to Nikon bodies and lenses, but to other brands as well. If you are using a different system than Nikon FF (APS-C, M4/3, med format, etc.) it would be very helpful to remind other members of the meme as to the 35mm equivalent so we can better understand the role of the lens in a 35mm system context. You may also use one lens with several bodies, or a different body with each of two lenses. Just remind us of what you are shooting with.

If you are not in the northern hemisphere do not worry about it. You are very much invited to participate.

I will be visiting various forums trying to get the message out. Please join me in contacting others as you see fit. Hopefully we can together make this relaxed meme every bit as successful as the Octoberfest meme over time. We will be having a post-meme discussion after the meme is over to start to collect our thoughts on how to make it better in the future.

Here are the participants and known lens/camera choices as of Tuesday Morning (6:00am) EST, May 20. Please check here for updates; I will try to update at least once every evening.

I will be using two bodies, D7100 and D4 and two primes. My favorite 60f/2.8 and going to bring out my 200f/2.8...both micro lenses. Hope I did this right.

Yikes! I just read the rule that today is the deadline for lens changes. I will be shooting with 2 lenses: 35mm f/2 and ... 35mm f/2.

One will be the AFD and the other the AIS
. I use these on either an FX digital, DX digital, AF film, or MF film camera (D700, D2x, N80, or FG.) I have long wanted to compare and contrast these two, very differently constructed lenses.

just out of interest anyone else from the southern hemisphere for this meme, or am i the only one shooting into fall and winter for the next month

At this point, I think you are the only one, Les. If you know of kinsmen on the Café, go round 'em up!

Harry, a few errors must have slipped in on the gear i will use, for camera fx likely the d800 and df for lenses nikkors 24mm f/1.4 and 105mm f/2

Sorry, Fons. I've given up trying to edit the spreadsheet at the same time as the list. Too much chance for confusion. I'll change it.

My bad, Chris. The date is wrong; you can change up until the final post Friday at 11:00pm (when I put the spreadsheet to bed). But I'll post your changes for now.

How great to see you again, Birgit! The format does take some getting used to .... but practice makes perfect. Just make those doggies jump through their hoops for you as per usual. And don't neglect that good old New England architecture you have out there in the preserve. You are on your way to the list.

Terrific, Morten. I'll get the changes and additions up tonight.
