Squeaky 17-35

Discussion in 'General Technical Discussion' started by Czechman01, Jul 2, 2005.

  1. Sometimes my 17-35 squeaks when focusing. It only happens once in a while for a few cycles and then it works perfectly. I'm positive that if I sent it in for service it would behave perfectly so I'm wondering if this is a known issue and what the prognosis is.

    Anyone run into this problem?

Happened to mine too. Intermittant squeaking. Cost me $400 to get it repaired, then I sold it for 750. Such a deal. If it doesn't bother you, and it still works, live with it.

  3. Thanks Steve,

    Luckily, I'm still under warranty.

So, this problem doesn't have to be heard to be diagnosed? If that's the case, it's going for service.

The squeek is the focus motor, sometimes if they are cold or haven't been used for a while it may squeek for the first focus or two, this is fine. If it squeeks continuosly all the time, Nikon will replace the motor. That's the $400!

I /think/ that the 17-35 was one of the first AFS lenses, so an early problem. This is fairly well know with this lens.

If it's under warantee, get nikon to have a look at it for free :)
