A few hours ago a state of emergency was declared here in Canterbury, New Zealand, due to heavy rain and flooding.
Of course before that happened I was out earlier this morning getting videos.

This is what the river bed usually looks like....

I showed the river video to my 3 year old granddaughter, she commented “that looks dangerable”. It sure does. Are the flood waters still rising?

Yep, that's some flooding alright!
It's a considerable difference between the normal riverbed and the current situation. But it looks like the bridges were built high enough to stay above even serious floods like this one. Nice video, Desmond.

Thanks guys - Monday morning and they didn't have to evacuate anyone overnight. Yesterday they had told the people in most areas of Ashburton that they needed to be ready to evacuate so those people had a tense night. We are on the other side of the river in Tinwald which is a low risk area.

This is a map of damaged and closed roads in the area - the weather has calmed down a lot today.

Yikes! Desmond, how far would you have to drive to find a third bridge to get to the other side? Do you have to cross the river for work? I hope things get repaired quickly.
I can follow the green line for 80 km at 60km/hr to get to and from work :)
We've been lucky, yesterday morning they had the bridge open to light traffic for a few hours so I could get to work, then the engineers did their inspections and opened it from 3pm to 6pm so I could get back across to work. This morning it is open again for light traffic.

At around 1:00 I start crossing the bridge and just after 1:30 I go through the dip....

Ya gotta hope they know their stuff letting the traffic onto the bridge!
