I am shooting a newborn for a good friend in a couple of weeks. Very informal, but I have never shot a newborn besides my own (and that was mostly with film...) So mostly, I am looking for some ideas for posing/props and any thing to look out for? Also, if you know of a photographer that does great work and has a web portfolio, I would love to take a look? The baby will be about 10 days old.

Chad do a google image search, lots there!

You type "baby" into Google images, you better have the filter on.:biggrin: I did, and found a ton of stuff, but thought that someone here might have something better...

Hey Chad,

I have been looking around for the same thing and found this site http://www.kelleyryden.com/babyblog/ I think the pictures they have are great with great ideas. Hope these help.

And this is something better. Thanks!

My girlfriend knows this photographer. From what I hear she is fun and active while the baby is awake, thus keeping it entertained (obviously something you want) and soft and quiet while the little one sleeps. Just adjust your attitude and gear to the scene you're in.

I'm sure you probably already know about that... I personally haven't done a 'new born' shoot, but I have done a 6 month and year session before. What I have found is DO NOT expect to start getting good picture until at least halfway through so save your awesome ideas until the end.

It takes a baby a lot longer to get used to someone flashing and sticking a 'big dark scary reflective circle box thing' in their face, than normal adults... You undoubtedly will get good shots all the time, especially expressions in the few little while... but save your good stuff till the end.

Oh, and work around the baby's schedule. Otherwise, NOTHING will work

Hope that helps,

Thanks Scott! Great link. We have a white blanket being made, baskets, white and black backgrounds and a couple of very nice locations (inside & outside in the shade) to work with. And we have all afternoon, so hopefully we can find that magic window. Hopefully between her mom and my wife they can keep her entertained and happy.
