Summer Suet, gotta try

Discussion in 'Birds' started by Lou Buscher, Jul 10, 2007.

  1. Had this idea, as I was getting ready to go to my rehab for the knee. Lots of people feed the birds old bread but real people go out and spend 20 bucks per bag for real seed. So I decided to try adding some peanut butter to the bread. After spreading I cut it into cubes and placed it in different places in the feeding area and then spent 20 minuets washing the stuff off my hands. I then set my lunch (peanut butter and jelly of cause), my camera, and got my ice bag for my knee along with a cold cup of coffee and I was all set in my chair on my favorite deck. (14 photos)

These are too cute and obviously your backyard friends love the peanut butter bread as much as you! Good stuff Lou.
  5. I think your addicted Lou, Nice to have that variety in the backyard.
  6. Lou, you cracked me up with your captions! Hmmm, maybe I should try more "natural" looking feeders! Nice job!
  7. I guess it goes to show that PB is a basic food group for all critters.
Now, you need to test the other food group members:
    Ice Cream (may be tough)
    Beer (fill the bird bath).

  8. Thanks Andy and I really had a lot more photo chances but I was laughing at them and not taking photos. I used the BushHawk with my new mount and it worked great with one hand while siting in the chair with ice on the knee and the ice didn't last long today. Boy I hate heat.
  9. Yeah I would think so also Gary as I have not another thng I can do but chase the cows out of my yard:wink:. Thanks for the look
  10. Yeah Dianne you got that right as the people that make the feeders get some big bucks for them. Me I use coffee cans so if a bear or raccoon gets one at least I haven't lost money and the squirrels can't really hurt them as they are all steel. All my bread was gone in nothing flat so I need to find a store that sells one day old bread and some cheap PB and walk around placeing them on the branch tips. Thanks for looking.

Your birds are going to be too fat to fly, along with the chipmunk! They'll be waddling around your backyard and taking off like those old cargo planes... Lift! Lift! Lift!
  14. ROFL! I can just picture this in my mind! Well said!

Lou, one thing I do is get the cheap peanut butter from the store and then mix it with cornmeal. I then spread it on some branches, I also have a feeder I made out of 4" branch that I drilled several holes in. I then put the peanutbutter mix in the holes. The birds love it.
Here is one of the birds having a snack.

  16. THanks Gale Yes a little at a time, slowly, ever so slowly.
  17. What about the peanutbutter:confused:  Awhhh you better hold off on sending the breat as it will be toast when it gets here.:biggrin:
  18. No Pia it's HUFF,HUFF,HUFF and besides I have a long runway just in case:biggrin: Chipmunks are alrady on a diet but we did teach them to dig wider holes. Thanks for the look
  19. O I see now the lift=life=lift thing is I have to get them to pump iron:biggrin:
    I didn't know:confused:
  20. Hey Mike yeah I do this in the winter as I take some raw peanuts and crush them then mix with peanut butter and with a object of flat wood I smear it on the bark of a big white Ash tree. The woodies love it as much as the suet.I have a suet feeder I made up so just the woodys can feed on it. I may have a photo.
    Thanks for the info.
