Hey everyone. I'm attempting my first camera shoot on a beach at sunset next week. I'll be playing around taking photos of the family and beach. I've never tried a sunset or shooting people in the evening. Any tips or advice with settings? I pretty much know a tripod is in order, but that's it. Thanks all.

You are going to need a flash (or more) if you are going to have the sun in the background. Everybody in the picture will be underexposed for sure without a flash.

A couple of things. First, do not include the sun in the metering of the sunset and I like to use center weighted metering for that. Second, I can understand the advise of Isamu but you do not have the knowledge or experience to play with the balance of lighting. Use the flash as fill-in, easy to do setting the flash in TTL-BL. for the portraits against the sunset.
Good luck.

grab a willing model, hie thyself to yon beach, and shoot, shoot, shoot! Apply what you've learned to the session you have scheduled.

g'luck
