T-Ball

My six year old twin grandsons had their first t-ball game tonight. I am not a sports photographer and have a lot to learn.

I shot in aperture priority with the 70-200 wide open. Should I shoot in shutter priority. If so, what shutter speed would I need to freeze the action? I could definitely bump the ISO on my D600.

Terri, 'ya done good'. I generally shoot AP; if I'm indoors I'll go to M.

For these kids, probably 1/500 min, or a bit higher. And put AutoISO to work for you. Sometimes people like a little motion blur like the last one, as long as the face is sharp, as it is.

2nd to last one, you'll want to straighten it a bit, look to the fence posts/building in the background for guidance.

I have the 70-200 vr I but I am not going to upgrade. I could have used more reach. Some of these are heavily cropped, but that's part of the beauty of all the MP. If you get a TC let me know what you get. I might be interested.

The problems I have been running into is "how far do I go" with cropping on the D600. What I have read, the 1.4 does well on the 70-200 VRI or II without any loss of IQ or AF speed. However, I have also read where the 1.7 and 2 work well though, with mixed feelings though. Seems some have luck with them and some do not. So essentially, I am just not sure what to get. I thought about renting a 1.4 to see. The 1.7 and 2.0 would be great to get longer (especailly 400mm with the 2.0!), but I love the IQ of the lens and hate to see that reduce.

Great set on your first attempt shooting T-ball. I use the 1.4 TC attached to my 70-200mm VRII when using the D700 and it really helps in delivering a great DOF at the f/4 minimum aperture. Another suggestion that you may or may not like is I usually shoot with the White Balance set to cloudy to warm up the dirt on the field and the players.

Had two more games today. I put the minimum shutter speed on auto ISO at 1/500. Had a lot less blur in my shots. Also I warmed up the WB. Thanks for the suggestions. These kids are much younger...only four years old.
