When my next-door neighbor raises butterflies, she tags them so official researchers can track migration patterns. This Monarch butterfly emerged from the chrysalis displayed at https://www.nikoncafe.com/threads/monarch-chrysalis.329064/

Setup
Photographed in the shade of my neighbor's carport using a sheet of white foam core as a tabletop. No human-made light and no light modifiers were used.

didnt know that was a thing to do

I also had never heard of it. In fact, when my neighbor first explained a week ago that she tags the butterflies, I couldn't imagine how it was done. It wasn't until she got out the tags and tweezers that I knew how to photograph the procedure. Based on this one, short operation that I witnessed, the tweezers weren't used for their capability to squeeze the ends together. I think she could have used a small screwdriver to do the same thing. That's because the tags are self-adhesive items.

It must be a talent to do such a thing without harming the butterfly. Very interesting.
She was able to hold the butterflies in place without squeezing them. She also took great care not to hold them by the back of the wings. That's because if a certain substance in that area rubs off the wings, it prevents them from being able to fly properly.
