Tamron AF18-200MM F/3.5-6.3 XR Di II??

I currently own a Tamron 24-135mm lens that I purchased 3 years ago when I got my D100. Although I don't use it as much anymore, it is still my favorite "walking around" lens when I don't want to carry alot of gear. I've been looking at the new 18-200mm for the extra reach. Has anyone tried it? How does it compare to the 24-135mm?

    I hadn't seen it.

  4. linm,

I had the same SP 24-135 lens and switched to the 18-200 just a few weeks ago. The 18-200 is not quite has sharp as the 24-135. However, unless you are talking about making 20x30 blowups you won't notice it. Personally I will always use my prime lenses when I want to produce the highest quality image. So I switched. I will try and post a couple of samples later.

I shot about 30-40 images with each lens in a direct comparison in front of the store where I shop. Next I took the images home and looked at them on the screen. I felt the 18-200 wasn't as sharp but had better contrast then the 24-135. However, when I printed an 8x10 from each I didn't see any sharpness difference so the image off the 18-200 looked better. The choice was easy for me at that point.

    Enjoy,
    Scott

  5. See if this is helpful at all...

    Lens Test Page

The file names which have "SP" are from the Tamron SP 24-135 lens.
The file names which have "Di" are from the Tamron AF18-200 XR Di lens.

I through all my "test images" into this very quick site. No prep went into it at all.
